Nurses have a responsibility to identify risks and patient behaviors that contribute to the spread of communicable diseases, such as HCV. Currently, approximately 399,000 people die on an annual basis from hepatocellular carcinoma and cirrhosis from an estimated global population of 71 million infected people (World Health Organization, 2018). The increased number of young people newly infected with HCV indicates a significant and troubling health trend considering their role in society. Nurses will need to be better informed to face the challenges associated with caring for the increasing rates of young adult patients with HCV.
