The Add Hardware Wizard is a valuable tool for installing all types of devices and drivers In this project, you use the Add Hardware Wizard in Windows XP/Vista/7, Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, and Windows Server 2008/Server 2008 R2. You should complete this project for at least one of the desktop operating systems and one of the server operating systems. You need an account that has Administrator privileges. And, your computer should not have newly installed hardware, so that you can manually practice the full range of steps. You do not need to have an actual printer connected to complete these steps.

To add hardware and install drivers using the Add Hardware Wizard in Windows XP and Server 2003/Server 2003 R2:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click the Category View option, click Printers and Other Hardware, and click the Add Hardware link in the left pane (see Figure 6-14). In Windows Server 2003, click Start, click Control Panel, and click Add Hardware.

2. Click Next after the Wizard starts. What does the wizard do at this point?

3. Click Yes, I have already connected the hardware. Click Next.

4. Scroll through the list of hardware that is already installed and record some examples.

5. Click Add a new hardware device. Click Next.

6. What options do you see? Record your observations.

7. Select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced). Click Next.

8. Click Printers. Click Next.

9. Use the default port selection, which is LPT1 (Recommended Printer Port), and click Next.

10. Select HP as the Manufacturer and HP Color LaserJet as the Printer. Click Next.

11. Notice that you can select whether or not to use this printer as the default printer. For this project (because it is practice and your system may already have a preferred default printer), select No. Click Next.

12. In Windows Server 2003, provide a name for the printer, such as your initials plus “TestPrinter.” Click Next.

13. Make sure that Do not share this printer is selected. (Note that this is where you could choose to share the printer with others on the network.) Click Next.

14. Normally you would select Yes to print a test page, but because you may not have an HP Color LaserJet actually connected to your computer for this project, click No. Click Next.

15. Review your printer settings and click Finish. If the driver you chose does not pass Windows logo testing, you will see a warning message. Close any open windows, such as the Printers and Other Hardware window in Windows XP. To add hardware and install drivers using the Add Hardware Wizard in Windows Vista and Server 2008:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, select Classic View in the left pane (if necessary), and double-click Add Hardware.

2. Click Next in the Welcome to the Add Hardware Wizard window (see Figure 6-15).

3. Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced) and then click Next.

4. In the next window under Common hardware types, record five types of hardware listed.

5. Click Printers and click Next in the From the list below select the type of hardware you are installing window.

6. In the Choose a printer port window, leave LPT1: (Printer Port) selected for Use an existing port and click Next.

7. For the sake of practice, in the install the printer driver window click Canon as the Manufacturer and Canon Bubble-Jet BJ30 under Printers. Click Next.

8. In the Type a printer name window, enter CanonBJ30- and your initials for the Printer name, such as CanonBJ30-JP. You also have the option to select this as your default printer. Click Next.

9. Wait a few moments for the printer driver to be installed.

10. Leave Share this printer so that others on your network can find and use it selected as well as the default Share name. Click Next.

11. In the You’ve successfully added (printername) window, notice that if an actual printer is attached to the computer, you can click Print a test page to verify your installation. Don’t print a test page, but do click Finish.

12. Close the Control Panel window.
