In this project, you learn how to use the System Preferences tool in Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard to learn from where to configure the keyboard and mouse. You will need to have a mouse plugged into your computer. The account you use will need to have Administrator privileges.

To learn from where to configure the keyboard and mouse in Leopard:

1. Click the System Preferences icon in the Dock; or ensure that Finder is open, click Go in the menu bar, click Applications, and double-click System Preferences in the Applications window.

2. Click Keyboard & Mouse in the Hardware section of the System Preferences window.

3. Ensure the Keyboard tab is selected (see Figure 6-26).

4. Notice that you can set the Key Repeat Rate and the Delay Until Repeat parameters.

5. Click the Mouse tab in the Keyboard & Mouse window.

6. Notice you can set the Tracking Speed and the Double-Click Speed.

7. Click the Bluetooth tab (if this tab is available) and then click the Keyboard Shortcuts tab to view the options on these tabs.

8. Close the Keyboard & Mouse window and any other open windows.

To learn from where to configure the keyboard and mouse in Snow Leopard:

1. Click the System Preferences icon in the Dock; or be sure that Finder is open, click Go in the menu bar, click Applications, and double-click System Preferences in the Applications window.

2. Click Keyboard in the Hardware section of the System Preferences window.

3. Ensure the Keyboard tab is selected. Notice that you can set the Key Repeat Rate and the Delay Until Repeat parameters.

4. Click the Keyboard Shortcuts tab to view options for configuring shortcuts.

5. Click the left pointing arrow at the top left of the Keyboard window.

6. In the System Preferences windows, click Mouse in the Hardware section. Notice you can set the Tracking Speed and the Double-Click Speed. If you have not connected a Bluetooth or USB mouse to your computer, there will be a message that the computer is waiting for the device to be connected.

7. Close the Mouse window and any other open windows.
