Summarize the medical, psychological, and supernatural models of mental illness and give an example of each.

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

'Mental illness' is a condition associated with the person's brain and many theories have been postulated to explain the abnormal functioning of brain. The theories are explained on the basis of:

1. Biological or medical models

2. Psychological models

3. Supernatural models

Biological explanations include study of person's body, especially malfunctioning of human brain. The medical model explains that when brain is affected or damaged, it takes a toll on the normal functioning of the body.

Those who support medial model substantiate that the illness can be acquired over a period of time due to excessive physical and emotional stress, accident, trauma, toxins, polluted environment or improper diet or inherited from parents.

It is possible that a family with a medical history of mental illness in previous generations can pass on the genes to the next. A child can be born with mild illness, which may aggravate due to external factors.

Psychological model is dependent on the medical model and vice versa. It explains that abnormal behavior is a result of repeated exposure to emotional phases of anger, sadness, joy, frustration, disappointment, failures and betrayal.

Supernatural model states that abnormal behavior or diseases are a result of demon possessions. This theory was believed by the Greeks in the early 18th century after the fall of the Roman Empire.

To conclude, mental illness existed due to abnormality, which is explained by one of these above mentioned models.
