What was the significance of Kraepelin’s listing of the various mental disorders?
Mental disorder is a diagnosis done on mental pattern or behavioral pattern leading to functional diability or suffering in daily life. These disorders are caused by many different signs and symptoms. These sign and symptoms includes course and diability (suicide, self harm, social exclusion). The causes leading to these are traumic brain injury, abuse, neglect, bullying, social stress, drugs among others.
Kraepelin asked to first check the full history of the patient related to psychiatric problems or medical history. He asked for conducting the mental status examination, looking for symptoms, observing them thoroughly and going for proper diagnosis, which further helps in deciding the course of action. The disorders listed were as follows:
i. Psychotic disorder, such as manic depression reaction and schizophrenia.
ii. Psychoneurotic reaction, such as neurotic-depressive reaction, obsessive compulsive reaction.
iii. Disorders of behavior, intelligence (passive dependency, antisocial personality, borderline intelligence, specific learning defects,) and character.
