Describe and give an example exemplifying the tension between explanations of mental illness based on the medical model and those based on the psychological model.
Growth of natural science paced due to the application of the principles of the natural science on everything along with humans. Naturalism was considered to be bad as well as good for the psychology. It was bad because naturalism discouraged the psychological factors search for explaining the mental illness. Naturalism was considered to be good as is highly discouraged the concept of superstition as well as the mysticism.
By the end of nineteenth century the only belief was causes of the mental illness along with all the illness is the brain chemistry or the disordered physiology. This belief caused the retardation of the psychological causes search for all the mental diseases including frustration, cognitive factors and emotional distortion.
For the detection of the reasons behind the mental illness in the medical model, the psychological explanations were suspected. The debate for the explanation of the behavior of the human in the terms of biochemistry or physiology as per the medical model or on the basis of the psychological model, which stresses on the variables of the mind like unconscious movement, fear and anxiety formed the basis of the explanation of alcoholism.
Medical model believer considered the alcoholism as a diseases, which can be inherited or may be caused due to the biochemistry imbalance but according to the psychological model alcoholism is caused due to the circumstances, which causes the stress like conflict and anxiety. They consume alcohol to escape from the stress causing reasons.
