This project enables you to view the virtual memory information in Linux, and in Windows XP/Vista/7, Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, or Server 2008/ Server 2008 R2.

To monitor the use of swap space in Linux (and most versions of UNIX):

1. Open a terminal window.

2. Type vmstat and press Enter (see Figure 11-24). How much swap space, if any, is in use as shown under the swpd column?

3. Close the terminal window.

To monitor page file and memory use in Windows XP/Vista/7, Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, or Server 2008/Server 2008 R2:

1. Right-click the taskbar.

2. Click Task Manager (in Windows XP/Vista and Server 2003/Server 2003 R2) or Start

Task Manager (in Windows 7 and Server 2008/Server 2008 R2).

3. Click the Performance tab.

4. Notice the memory usage statistics and graphing information.

5. Notice the amount of memory that is paged compared to the amount that is not paged (see the Kernel Memory (MB) section) and record this information.
