In this project, you use Disk First Aid in Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard to verify a disk.

To verify a disk:

1. Ensure that Finder is open. Click Go in the menu bar, click Utilities, and double-click Disk Utility.

2. Click a disk in the left pane, such as Macintosh HD.

3. Click the First Aid tab, if it is not already selected.

4. Click Verify Disk (see Figure 11-20).

5. Click Verify Disk again to acknowledge you want to proceed.

6. Notice that the Show details area of the First Aid tab shows the progress of the verification.

7. If the disk needs to be repaired, you’ll see red messages to this effect and the recommendation to run the Disk Repair utility (see Figure 11-21). If you see such a message, click OK and then click Repair Disk. Otherwise, wait until the verification process is complete and close the Disk Utility and any other open windows.
