Support or refute Kimble’s contention that contemporary psychology consists of at least two incommensurable cultures.

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

Gregory Kimble, on analyzing the statements and theories given by different contemporary psychology followers, found a relation between the two temperaments given by James, Snow’s two cultures and Kuhn’s incommensurability.

Kimble came out with a scale which could easily note the extent of the degree of acceptance level of the rigorous scientific values over humanistic values.

This was administered on undergraduate students and also, APA (American Psychological Association) officers, and observations were recorded. Students showed an inclination towards humanistic values, whereas APA officers fell towards scientific values. Closer analysis was carried out for APA officers and detailed observations were taken.

Different divisions were looked into. Finally, Kimble came out with conclusion that two important incommensurable cultures exist in psychology. If his conclusion stands true, it would help in the explanation of the historic tension between scientific and applied psychologists.
