Is psychology a science? Defend your answer.

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

In psychology, the scientific method has been used successfully. Lawful relationships have been demonstrated by experimental psychologists between classes of behavior and stimuli (environmental events). Also, refutable, rigorous theories have also been devised by them for accounting those relationships.

There are many clear examples that prove that psychology is a science. One of these examples is the theory of Tolman and Hull. Scientific psychologists work together with neurologists and chemists who attempt to determine cognitive processes and biochemical correlates of memory.

Other psychological scientists work together with geneticists and evolutionary biologists for understanding social behavior origin in humans. It can be said that useful information has been provided by scientifically oriented psychologists in major psychology areas which includes perception, motivation, personality, psychotherapy, intelligence, memory and learning. However, many psychologists are not scientists, while some certainly are.
