E Repeat Problem but turn the section upside down. With the legs pointed downward, they are in tension and can withstand 19 ksi. The part of the section in compression at the top is now well supported and can withstand 21 ksi.

Problem

The beam section shown in Figure is to be extruded from 6061-T6 aluminum. The allowable tensile strength is 19 ksi. Because of the relatively thin extended legs on the top, the allowable compressive strength is only 14 ksi. The beam is to span 6.5 ft and will be simply supported at its ends. Compute the maximum allowable uniformly distributed load on the beam.
