Answer #1

How Might a high-fiber diet most protect against diabetes?

Step 1:

a. It increases the absorption of glucose by the intestines.

This is the wrong statement. Soluble fiber slows down the carbohydrate digestion and decreases the glucose absorption and thereby lowers the rise of blood glucose level in the blood after a meal.

Step 2:

b. It lowers kDL levels

Fiber diet such as oatmeal, oat grain will lower the blood cholesterol level especially low-density lipoprotein and thereby protect against heart disease. So this is not appropriate for protection against diabetes.

Step 3:

c.it decreases blood estrogen.

High fiber diet decreases blood estrogen level. So women intake of high fiber diet will have a lower risk for breast cancer. This is not appropriate for protection against diabetes.

d. It reduces the need for insulin or medication

Carbohydrate will impact more on blood glucose level. Most of the fiber does not account into carbohydrate count. So the fiber does not require the insulin and thereby reduces the need for insulin or medication. So this is the appropriate one to protect against diabetes.
