The prevalence of diabetes is increasing in Arab countries and is estimated to reach the level of 96.2 by 2035. The type 2 diabetes mellitus simultaneously increasing the CVD, obesity and other chronic diseases. The factors behind this increased prevalence are genetic risk factors, change of lifestyle, decreased physical activity. Arab is a developing country and the Islamic culture which controls the aspects of life that affects the early diagnosis of DM and its complications. This can be controlled through several approaches such as

  • Religious Teaching: Arab people believe that overweight is a sign of social status. They think exercise and activity are only for youth and for the adults. So the health professionals have to assess the individual's physical activity and modify the lifestyle behavior through education and develop the plan with respect to their cultures and norms.
  • Health Education: Increased awareness and health education about diabetes management through public workship areas. Educate women to reduce the social pressure and to improve physical activity. Religious heads should be included for more involvement of people.
  • Diabetic Prevention Programme: Implement diabetic programme at the local level. Screening programme is arranged at the worship areas to achieve the maximum target people. Policies should be set to prevent secondary and tertiary complications. Develop a plan of care according to the individual's lifestyle practices and needs.
