Risk management professionals should not take lightly the complexity associated with providing healthcare services. While directions, outsider payer necessities, and permitting/accreditation gauges add to this multifaceted nature, formalized approaches and strategies can alleviate it by advancing working environment security, administrative consistence, and the conveyance of sheltered, brilliant patient consideration. In addition, elegantly composed, up and coming arrangements and methodology diminish practice fluctuation that my outcome in substandard consideration and patient mischief. The operational challenges associated with drafting (and maintaining) comprehensive written policies place heavy demands on healthcare managers. Given increasing financial pressures and the top-priority status that must be given to direct patient care, managers may find it difficult to find time to review or update policies and procedures. Conceding strategy and technique advancement, be that as it may, may result in negative outcomes. Approaches and strategies may wind up obsolete, and the individuals who cling to obsolete arrangements may do activities that are not any more predictable with industry-perceived practices. On the other hand, they may essentially choose to ignore the approach. Either decision may result in patient damage and a negligence guarantee. Proof that parental figures pursued obsolete arrangements may obstruct barrier of a generally faultless case.

The Purpose of Policies and Procedures

  • Formalized, composed approaches and strategies satisfy various vital purposes:
  • Encourage adherence with perceived proficient practices.
  • Advance consistence with controls, resolutions, and accreditation necessities (e.g. HIPAA, EMTALA, CMS Conditions of Participation, DNV/Joint Commission).
  • Reduce practice variation.
  • Standardize practices across multiple entities within a single a health system.
  • Serve as a resource for staff, particularly new personnel.
  • Reduce reliance on memory, which, when overtaxed, has been shown to be a major source of human errors or oversights.

Problematic Policies

When a domain unknowingly develops a policy or procedure that already exists—perhaps another domain issued a similar policy earlier—there will likely be differences, resulting in confusion as to which policy should be followed. Discrepancies in clinical policies may also result in allegations that leadership allowed “two levels of care” to be provided, thereby increasing the organization’s risk exposure in several ways.
