Human body is made up of 50 to 65% of this macronutrient.

Some of the functions of it are

  • Helps to maintain fluid balance
  • It regulates the body temperature ,maintainscthe moisture needed for the body
  • It plays a key role in elimination of toxic substances from the body through perspiration, micturation and by feces
  • Adequate amount of water can prevent gastrointestinal problems like constipation .CNS: prevents headaches, CVS:prevents hypotension .Renal:overload
  • It dilutes the other nutrients to make it accessible to the cells and tissues

The water is an important component to balance the entire mechanism of the body from elimination, excretion,acid base balance ,temperature regulation,protecting the tissues and organs etc., Without adequate amount it can lead to alteration in the body function and make one ill.

Over consumption of water can lead water intoxication.The risk factors of

  • Intravenous fluids in hospitalized patients in excess
  • Sports :drinking water in excess immediately after heavy activities
  • Medical conditions like diabetes(polyuria)

The risk factors for under consumption

  • Infants
  • Children
  • Mentally disoriented people
  • Renal failure,CHF

Hence water is a vital part in one's life.Using it in the required amount is safer. Overconsumption or under consumption is always dangerous to health.
