Strategies I use to develop an improved understanding of my communication style include an enthusiastic tone of voice which I personally find that people gravitate and enjoy being around. In addition, I like to speak assertively which is “the ability to express positive and negative ideas and feelings in an open, honest, and direct way” (Impact Factory, 2019). Speaking assertively is something that took time to achieve over the years, and I think nursing has definitely helped me get there! Two strategies I think I can use to strengthen my listening skills are to never interrupt someone and always let them finish speaking and to never be judgmental and keep an open mind! A specific example of a communication in which I was involved during nursing school, and required to manage a conflict with a patient, would have to be a time where this patient was making rude, insensitive and highly offensive comments and instead of arguing with the patient, I responded with a heavy sarcasm. This of course led to the patient becoming angrier and eventually began to become combative. This could have been handled differently by addressing the remarks immediately and if they still continued to occur, get the charge nurse involved rather than adding fuel to the fire.
When resloving a conflict -
a) firstly a nurse should not make fun of it or use any sarcasm or offensive language,
b) secondly the nurse should patiently listen to the problem and cause of conflict and respond calmly without interuppting in between the conversation.
c) without evoking or stigmatizing the anxiety level relaxation techniques should be used to reduce the hostile behaviour .
D) and lastly to solve a conflict one should not call or summon for a nursing in charge.
E) and if the patient become combative then distance should be maintained from the patient and sharp instruments should be kept away from him.
2. One question arise that is-
Inspite of the insensitive and highly offended comments of the patient why the nurse will start arguing with the patient?
