I am both an active listener and an assertive/passive speaker. Some ways that I can improve my communication style is by engaging more in present, if the topic bores me, I tend to listen but not engage in the conversation and my mind starts wondering away as I stare at you yet not engaged. Two ways I can strengthen my communication style is to stop and give that person my undivided attention although the topic may not interest me at the moment, maybe one day it will benefit me from listening and engage into a conversation. Also, I have the tendency to listen to the person talking yet not acknowledge that I’m paying attention. For example, on Monday during clinicals, I was listening to another student speak and the Professor asked me if I was paying attention, in fact, I was and I was able to repeat all that the student said but the fact that I had no eye contact with the other student and I was looking away is what led the Professor to think I wasn’t paying attention. The outcome was that when I looked at the student after the Professor was talking to me I looked at the student and she seemed sad and that made me feel bad because that wasn’t my intention to make her feel like I wasn’t paying attention because I really was but I was not engaged and not showing her that I cared and not looking at her while she spoke. I realized it and I will continue to work at it because seeing the students face made me feel bummed that she had that face because of me.
This kind of attitude is common among all, but it should not be work in all time and it result horrible in some situation as like in this case. If the topic or content is not attractive our human mind will not listen up to it and won't fix up with it. But there are some ways, you can call it as tricks that are used in this situation to handle it properly. Maintaining eye contact is very critical while being in any conversation and mostly it will prevent the getting of hard feeling from the opposite speaker.
