Answer #1

Answer 1: Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder. It is a blood disorder characterised by the abnormality in the haemoglobin molecules in the red blood cells (RBCs). The affected individuals have a wide variety of gastrointestinal disorders. Many a times it causes diagnostic confusion.

The first thing to be done in such emergency is the attempt to reduce the pain of the patient. Body fatigue should be monitored. The respiratory rate should be monitored and sufficient oxygen should be provided to the patient because the oxygen-carrying capacity is deprived in the RBCs. The impaired gas exchange should be monitored. The changes in the cardiac rhythm should be monitored. There could be observations of acute chest syndrome due to high oxygen demand by the body. There should be through checks of chest pain. Signs of fever, cough and breathlessness should be monitored. Brain tissues are sensitive to low oxygen level and hence consciousness level should be regularly accessed. Administer adequate fluid to the patient. Normal body temperature should be maintained to reduce metabolic oxygen demands. For this, aspirin could be given to the patient. Complete blood test should be done.
