Nursing is a profession which has grown from the basic need of a human to be cared for, in times of wellness, disease or even assisting in death so that human life is treated with dignity. Nursing as a profession has drastically grown after the efforts of Florence Nightingale by giving formal education to a nurse so that she can give quality care to the patients. The practice of nursing has always been responding to the health needs of the society. Ancient days of Nurses were to provide help in household chores and care rendered at the battlefield. With education, nurses were considered to be equal partners with doctors for rendering care to the patients. The role of a Nurse is continuing to rapidly evolve emphasizing the role of Nurse not only for the curative treatment aspects but focussing more on the preventive aspects of treatment which has led for various expanded role of Nurse in enormous fields of health care.

Expanded role of a nurse:

With the upcoming needs of people in the society, the role of nursing has extended within it's nursing practice into speciality nurses such as Acute care nurse, Adult care nurse, Family care nurse, home nurse, school health care, public health care nurse, tele medicine Nurse, holistic health care Nurse, etc. These role require specialised skills, knowledge in the particular field so as to render the highest quality patient care. Nursing researcher is one of the most important expanded role of a nurse as research keeps on adding to the body of knowledge of nursing profession which is expected to grow in the future of nursing field.

Nursing in Continuum of health.

As health is never static but dynamic between highest ability of living and death at it's extremely, a nurse functions in every aspects, delivering her care in the form of promotion of health eg. Public health nurse , prevention of health illness eg. Diabetic health nurse, care during rehabilitation and even activities of care performed during death of an individual to provide peaceful death. The present need of society is promotion of health and prevention of disease due to which Nurses practice has grown in every field.

Present challenges faced by healthcare industry is highest quality of care to be provided accessible to every human at minimal cost. This concept of care has led to formation of Medical insurance companies and third party payment systems. With time, nursing has also proved it's benefit in Accountable Care Organizations wherein she functions as quality health care provider, healthcare Cordinator, quality improvement manager and communicator to advocate for the patient to receive the bestest care available.

With improvement in medical field, all the hospitals and advance health care institution care tend to be situated in cities which makes it difficult for low economic and vulnerable group people at risk. This condition of society led to formation of Nurse Managed Healthcare Clinics which are situated in rural and low income areas, wherein healthcare is provided by Nurses independently as well as in collaboration with physicians by Nurse Practitioner and which caters all the needs of the society irrespective of their economy, race, varied culture and in remotest of the parts of the world.

A nurse is the largest workforce in the healthcare industry with maximum time duration of the nurses spent in direct contact and patient care. Nurses need to be trained more, encouraged to get better specialisation diplomas and degrees which will ensure the Nurses are prepared. More emphasis should be laid on Residency Programms, Continued Nursing Education, In-service Education should be encouraged to prepare nurses for the future. Few Obstacles in nursing today is leadership by medical fields and limiting the scope of action for Nurses. These Obstacles need to be tackled so that nurses are empowered to function in best of their ability and be contribute to the fullest of activities dealing with Quality Patient Care.
