Culture of a person in simple terms is a collection of beliefs, values, behaviour, practises and morals he/she follows. The beliefs and life styles of people come from their cultural practises. These are passed on to people from their ancestors and parents. So culture is a part of human life that is very close to ones heart. It is what teaches the people how to behave, what to do, what is good of bad. There are multiple cultures in the world around us.
Cultural competency can be explained as understanding, accepting and respecting the similarities as well as differences between various cultures and living with people from different cultures together in harmony. It also involves being neutral and respectful to others’ point of view, opinions, perspective on different issues and the way they chose to deal with them even though it might be against your own cultural beliefs and practices.
As a part of their job nurses will come across people of different cultural backgrounds and ethnicities. This could provide some challenges which they’ll have to deal with on a daily bases. So it is very important for a nurse as a healthcare provider to be culturally competent to succeed in their professional career. The nurse acts as a connecting bridge between clinicians and patients. The nurses are the ones who deal with patients directly while providing care. Some procedures and practices which are quite normal in some cultures are considered as sinful in others. By knowing about the various cultures and the beliefs of the people in those cultures the nurse can provide treatment and service in a way that is acceptable by them according to their cultural beliefs. This makes the patient to feel comfortable with the treatment and create a level of trust on the nurses and doctors. This helps in better patient-nurse relationship and encourages them to cooperate better with the healthcare provider and share important information which can help in better treatment. The patients also tend to respond better to treatment when they feel comfortable and believe in the treatment they are receiving.
