1).

Fibromyalgia syndrome is a condition characterized by widespread pain of muscles and connective tissue with extreme fatigue, muscle stiffness, and sleep disturbances. The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not known, but the recent exposure to a mental or physically traumatic event and the genetic factors contribute to its pathogenicity. The diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia given below:

  • Pain and tenderness in the patient – 11 of 18 particular tender points in the regions of the neck, shoulders, chest, hips, elbows, and knees
  • Pain persisting for at least three months
  • No other condition present that can cause these symptoms

2). Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal disorder with characteristic widespread pain and high painful response to pressure. Other symptoms include sleep disturbances, joint immobility, tiredness, tingling, difficulty in swallowing and numbness. The patients may also suffer from psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Though the term fibromyalgia is recently being used, the symptoms of this disease were observed during 1500 BC itself.

3). The complications of fibromyalgia:

Fibromyalgia syndrome negatively affects the lifestyle and causes disability. People with fibromyalgia syndrome are also at risk of developing depression, migraine headache, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and restless leg syndrome.
