The difference between values and beliefs can sometimes blur into one another. A belief is something someone uses from their own experience and applies it to a future scenario. A belief can be seen as unchanging or difficult to change. Value, however, refers to a broader principle that is applicable to not just one individual but society as a whole. For example, a value that we all hold to be true is respect for human dignity. Ideally, this transcends race, color, creed, and sexual orientation. But when trying to put this value into action, someones personal beliefs may interact and contradict this. An illustration of this is if someone believes that a certain sexual orientation is not permissible their belief can supersede the underlying value of human dignity. My personal values and beliefs can affect my nursing practice in a few ways. I have to first establish that there are individuals that I may not always agree with because they have different beliefs and viewpoints from me. However, when this occurs, it is important to look toward my values and to never dehumanize any individual or individuals in my practice but also outside my practice. Because nurses are lifelong learners, I have to be open to different viewpoints, their validity, and the idea that my own beliefs can change over time. Ethics and morals certainly drive nursing and help provide everyone with the best care possible.
Answer: In the case of nursing profession, it is necessary to understand the difference between the values and belief. As belief is something someone uses from their own experience and applies it to a future scenario. A belief can be seen as unchanging or difficult to change whereas value can be defined as the respect as well as principles involved.
Nursing is a life long learning profession where nurses need to understand the importance of the values to silver quality of care to the patients and bring out best result.
The question arises that what if the belief of a person contraindicated with his belief? At this situation how to understand which should be right?
