Medical terms or medical terminology are the words or phrases used in the field of medical science to describe different body parts, conditions and diseases.
The medical terms are of two types constructed and non constructed.
1. Constructed medical terms: constructed medical terms consists of a root word, a prefix and a suffix.
The root word is the main word that states the body part or a condition. For eg: “arrhythmia” consists of root word rhythm.
A prefix is attached before the root word. The prefix usually describes place, time, status or location. For eg: word “dystonia” contains prefix dys which means abnormal.
Suffix is used after the root word. For eg: word “appendicitis” consists of suffix itis which means inflammation.
2. Non constructed medical terms: non constructed medical terms does not consists of root, suffix and prefix. They are often derived from other languages or named after some person.
Medical terms are the standardised language used by healthcare professionals. They are universally used thus creating a similar medical language in every healthcare system.
The medical term helps understand and determine the body part, its location, condition and associated disease.
Breaking down a medical term into root, prefix and suffix helps in better understanding of the subject. Having a thorough knowledge of how a medical term is structured is important. This helps in easily identifying the root, prefix and suffix of the terminology. Once identification is completed definition and meaning of root, prefix and suffix becomes easier. This helps in easy understanding of the medical term.
Knowledge of structure of medical terms makes understanding of complex medical terms easier.
The medical terms are used in medical syllabus, patient data records, billing, insurance claims as well as in communication with other healthcare professionals.
