3. In cats, the B allele codes for black fur, and the b allele codes for orange fur. The gene is located on the X chromosome. However, the genotype XB/Xb results in fur with a mottled appearance called tortoise-shell. Suppose a tortoise-shell female is crossed with a black male.

a. What are the parental genotypes?

b. What phenotypic ratios would be expected in the offspring?

c. What is the mode of inheritance?

d. A rich client wants a tortoise-shell male. Can you deliver?

Answer #1

ANSWER :

a) The genotype for the black fur male and tortoise shell female cat are XB YB and XB Xb respectively.

b) In the given case, phenotypic ratio of fur colour in the offsprings of first generation would be 1:1:1:1, which related to XB XB (black female), XB Y (black male), XB Xb (tortoise shell colour female) and Xb Y ( orange fur male) respectively.

c) The fur colour in cat is inherited in offsprings via incomplete type of dominance since allelic pairs are not capable to show a definite trait.

d) The tortoise shell male cat would not be obtain via cross of black fur male and tortoise shell female parents, only tortoise shell female (XB Xb) can be obtained

Fur color in dogs can be black, brown or white. The B gene is responsible for fur color. Dogs that inherit a dominant B will have black fur. Dogs that inherit 2 recessive alleles, bb, will have brown color. There is a second gene that contributes to fur color in dogs: gene I. Individuals who inherit a dominant allele, I, at this location, will always have white color. Individuals who inherit the homozygous recessive condition, ii, will be able to...

In cats with tortoiseshell coat color, the fur is white with patchy black and orange spots. In cats, the tortoiseshell gene is on the X chromosome, and the tortoiseshell phenotype requires the presence of 2 different alleles at this locus: one for orange fur (o) and one for black fur (b). What phenomenon best explains why female cats can inherit tortoiseshell coat color? In females, the alleles for coat color are pleiotropic, resulting in patches of orange and black coat...

Let's say that in chipmunks, the allele for a black tail stripe (B) is dominant to the allele for a white tail stripe (b), and that the allele for patches of fur on an ear ("ear tufts") is determined by a recessive allele (e), with plain ears resulting from a dominant allele (E). A chipmunk that is homozygous recessive for the tail trait and heterozygous for ear morphology mates with a chipmunk that is heterozygous for both tail and ear...

If these coat-color phenotypes are governed by a sex-linked gene, how can these observations be explained? A.The gene is on the X chromosome and three alleles must be involved. B.Calico males die before birth C.In males, orange is always dominant over calico. D. The gene is on the X chromosome and heterozygous females display the calico phenotype. .
