Answer #1

1. Answer: CO2.

Solution: Pyruvate is formed by the glycolytic breakdown of glucose. Pyruvate is decarboxylated into acetyl CoA and the reaction is catalyzed by Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex. This enzyme complex requires five different coenzymes or prosthetic groups and thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) is one of them. In the absence of thiamine, the enzyme would not be working and pyruvate would not enter into Kreb's cycle for its complex breakdown into CO2. Therefore, these liver cells would have less CO2 than the normal liver cells with thiamine.

The patient was a 2 year old boy who presented with fasting hypoglycemia and acidosis. The liver was enlarged three-fold and kidneys two-fold. Hypoglycemia responded to oral doses of glucose but not to administered glucagon or epinephrine. During hypoglycemic episodes, lactic acid in the blood increased almost 10-fold higher than normal. Unlike the response in normal individuals, administration of oral galactose did not increase blood glucose concentrations but blood lactate levels were increased. Urine contained high levels of lactate. A...

This discussion focuses on the regulation of glycolysis and gluconeogenesis by phosphofructokinase-2 and will help you apply your understanding of these pathways and their regulation to adaptations in cancerous cells. You have successfully completed your internship rotation with the antibiotic group at MethylTranspharmiX and have moved into their Cancer Therapeutics division. In many cancers, cells use aerobic glycolysis rather than oxidative phosphorylation as their main energy source. This is known as the Warburg effect, and was first described by Otto...
