Yes, an organism can be benefitted by mutation these mutations are termed as beneficial mutations. They can create a new version of proteins which sometimes helps the organisms to adapt to changes in the environment. An example can be seen in many bacteria in which mutations helps them to survive in the presence of antibiotic drugs. Thus the mutations cause antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

There are many assertions made about how can insects survive higher levels of radiation exposure. One of the widely accepted reason is that radiation which penetrates the cells of the insects have usually fewer chromosomes as compared to humans, and so less DNA, as compared to mammal cells. Since the radiation poisoning which causes the breaks in the chromosome is the result of mutation or damage of DNA, having relatively less in insects which gives them survival abilities in high radiation exposure.
