The purpose of the balance sheet is to display financial information for an organization at a specific time. These are usually done at the end of an accounting period of an organization. This report shows all the assets , liabilities and net assets of an organisation. It helps organize companies and assess their current financial position.

The category of assets is the first general classification. Current and non-current assets are assets. Resources with a useful life of less than 1 year are currently available. This may include items such as cash , inventory or prepaid rental expenses. Non-current assets are resources that last a year or longer. This covers land, constructions or long-term investments.

The second classification is the category of liabilities. Economic obligations or debts owed by the organization are financial liabilities. Current liabilities and long-term liabilities are involved. Current obligations can include such things as payable accounts, payable notes, or accrued costs. Long-term liabilities are debts due over a year and long-term debts.

The final balance sheet classification is net assets. Net assets are the differences in the financial interests of the owner and other external donors in the organization between the assets of the organization and the liabilities owed by the organization. This applies to categories like unrestricted net assets, temporary net assets, permanent net assets.
