Endospores are the non-organeller structure found around the cells which is inert in nature and prevents any communication of the external environment to the inside of the cell. The endospore acts as a non-vegetatve protective layering around a cell and progresses the cell into a dormant stage under harsh conditions of temperature, humidity and nutrition and thus, prevents the cell from dying.

Chemically, the endospore is a complex polymer made up of calcium dipicolinate deposited in between the polymers of complex proteins which shield the inner cellular material from external harsh conditions. Thus, chemically, proteins represent the major constituents of the endospore wall.
