How could a counselor prevent an intervention from escalating from safe to unsafe? How can a counselor/case manager determine when they are unsafe?
There are certain instances where a safe environment might turn into an unsafe environment. One of the most important instances might occur when counselling an aggressive person because they would be uncomfortable with the counselling environment and might try to be aggressive both verbally and physically. Secondly, when a client tries to develop personal connection with the counsellor and tries for sexual favours, it’s definitely turning into unsafe. When a client bribes the counsellor to change the counselling report to suit the client’s needs, it’s unsafe. There are other instances such as when the counsellor continues to treat a client even when they know that they are not competent enough to treat that client, it would become unsafe.
