Answer #1

Integrins are heterodimeric principal receptors that act as transmembrane linkers between the extracellular matrix and the actin cytoskeleton. Integrins are proteins found in all animal cells and work alongside with other proteins: cadherins, selectins and syndecans, to mediate cell to cell and cell to matrix interaction. Proteins of integrin family consists of alpha and beta subtypes, which forms the transmembrane heterodimers. Integrins are crucially essential main receptor proteins that cells use to both bind to and respond to the extracellular matrix.

Focal adhesions, or cell-matrix adhesions are dynamic actin-integrin links which are complex plasma membrane-associated large macromolecular assemblies. These dynamic protein complexes form mechanical links between intracellular actin bundles and the extracellular substrate in many types of cells. The focal adhesions plays important role is in the immune system, in which WBCs (white blood cells) migrate along the connective endothelium following cellular signals to damaged biological tissue.
