1)Phagocytosis is a complex process that can be affected by many things. State a hypothesis as to something that you believe might affect phagocytosis in Tetrahymena.

Aim: to determine the effect of pH on the process of phagocytosis on Tetrahymena
Hypothesis: Change in the pH from the neutral pH of 7, the rate of phagocytosis decreased.
Alternative hypothesis: there is no effect in the phagocytosis in Tetrahymena, with pH change.
Procedure:
· 5 tubes are taken with media for growth of Tetrahymena like nutrient media with 2% proteose-peptone.
· pH range of 5,6,7,8, 9 are maintained in each tube
· The time of incubation is kept constant for 2 hours.
· Number of phagocytotic vacuoles formed may be measured from each tube, for every 10 minutes for 2 hours.
Dependent variable: Number of phagocytotic vacuoles.
Independent variable: pH
Control: tube with pH 7
Interpretation:
The number of phagocytotic vacuoles decreases with change in pH. Thus, neutral pH (also acting as negative control) has the maximum number of phagocytotic vacuoles. This disproves the alternate hypothesis.
