Each cell of the body contains 23 pairs(46) chromosomes. These were obtained from parents. Among these 46, 23 obtained from male parent and 23 obtained from female parent. This is because the gamates(egg and sperm) contain 23 chromosomes each which is haploid to maintain constant number in further generation. Thus egg and sperm fuses in reproduction resulting in the formation of 46 chromosomes diploid zygote which develops into offspring.
