In your initial posting, suppose you were asked to study some aspect of job performance at either your current or past job. What would be the variables you would study? How would you measure your variables ensuring reliability and validity? What challenges are there in measuring your variables in such a way as to gather meaningful data that makes sense? The variable of interest will be the average performance while doing job,I.e.average of time required to do a job will be study variable here.

Second variable can be variability in time required to do a job.so sample variance may be here variable of interest.

For determining the reliability of the variables we have to estimate the parameters such as average and variance and determining it's precision of estimates as the estimate which will have the least variance it will be better .
