Ribozymes are the RNA molecules which is able to catalyse chemical reactions.

The major catalyst functions of the RNA molecules are,

  • Amino acids condensation in the ribosome’s (rRNA is a ribosyme) peptidyl transferase center that is catalyzed by the  RNA component of the large subunit.
  •   mRNA splicing after transcription in eukaryotes is catalyzed by the U2-U6 snRNAs ( ribosyme)
  • The small RNA with nucleolytic activity species can able to make site-specific cleavage and as well as ligation of RNA.
  • Enzyme ribonuclease P that has a structure with single RNA molecules bounded with protein. It has the ability cleave the tRNA substrate, where the protein part of the enzyme play indirect role to maintain the structure of the catalytic RNA.
  • Hammerhead ribozymes 30 nucleotide RNA sequence which used to catalyse the cleavage of single stranded RNA. So this can be used a best therapeutic agent by researchers. So that in therapeutics we get elevated concentrations of divalent ions to obtain a higher catalytic activity. It is also used in biosensor, functional genomics and gene discovery etc.

Hope it will helpful to you. Thank you
