After gram staining procedure, when the microorganisms are observed under a microscope,

the only difference between gram positive and negative bacteria is that of a color.

The gram positive bacteria retains the crystal violet color and hence appears violet.

The gram negative bacteria can not retain violet and hence appear pink(due to counterstain).
