IPTG is a molecular mimic of allolactose, a lactose metabolite that triggers transcription of the lac operon and therefore used to induce E.coli protein expression where the gene is under the control of lac operator .usually four gene of interest are in inserted into a commercial vector(pET vectors )are common that contains :

2.the lacl gene from lac operon that codes for the lac repressor.
