Sleep promotion :

Description of skill : To promote sleep

To improve the sleeping pattern of patients

To avoid insomnia

Indication: Insomnia , sleep disturbance, lack of sleep .

Nursing intervention (pre, intra, post) : In prep op period,, assess the sleeping pattern of patient. In intra op period, check the anesthesia given and monitor its effect. In post op period,, help the patient to attain pre op sleeping pattern by making measures such as reducing pain level,, provide noise free environment and induce sleep by giving warm milk. L tryptophan in warm milk will induce sleep .

Outcome / evaluation : To attain normal sleeping pattern .

Client education : Good sleep is necessary for good health . Drink warm milk before go to bed . Have a habit of reading books,, listening to music will give you a good sleep.. Make your environment noise free and tidy. Sleep in a comfortable position . Make wrinkle free bed.

Potential complications : Excessive sleep,, increasing in duration of sleep.

Nursing intervention : Educate the patient that 6 to 8 hours of sleep per day is essential. Sleep is necessary for the normal functioning of human body . Maintain good health by achieving good sleep at night .
