Solutions For An Introduction to Genetic Analysis Chapter 7 Problem 27P

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

a) During a semi-conservative mode of replication the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strands duplicate producing two copies of DNA with each one having one old strand and one new strand. It is in the new strand the normal isotope instead of the heavy isotope that the parent contains.

b) When the same DNA assumes a conservative mode of replication, the two newly synthesized DNA strands would be forming a new pair and the old ones would be forming another pair.

c) If two DNA molecule replicates side by side through semi-conservative mode of replication four new DNA would be formed with each DNA molecule containing one new strand and one old strand in their helix.

d) When the same process is repeated through conservative mode of replication then we would be getting four DNA helixes with two having older strands and two helixes having newer strands respectively.

e) Both b and d would be ruled out. This is because when the DNA undergoes division through semi-conservative method, the whole DNA strand would be made up of light nitrogen bases in their nucleotides. Other models would give one band of intermediate density.
