Mutations that occurs in the HO and HMRa genes in the α-yeast strain, prevents the strain from its property of switch mating. The HO gene codes for endonucleases that would cut the DNA to initiate switching and the HMRa gene locus has the cassette unexpressed genetic information for the MATa mating type.
