What, according to May, is the human dilemma?

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

Rollo Reece May (1909 – 1994), an American psychologist, introduced the theory of existentialism to USA (United States of America). He is the author of the book “Existence: A new dimension in psychiatry and psychology”. He was a clinical psychologist by profession, and shared his views that people frequently run away from responsibility and decision making.

May stated that humans are the subjects and objects of their experience. They experience several things in their lives and become objectified to it. He is stated as the passive object. He is compared to the nature itself, which reacts to his experience with surroundings.

Further, humans are also capable of feeling, interpreting, understanding and taking decisions along with experiencing. They can make their own choices and live their lives, with their own conditions. Hence, they are not merely passive objects, but are subject too. This dual nature of the human was termed as the Human Dilemma, by May. He explained it as paradox of human nature and his existence.
