Share a real-world example of each of the following relationships with the class: (1) one-to-one relationships; (2) one-to-many relationships; (3) many-to-many relationships. Which of these do you think is the most common? Which does a relational database handle most easily?

Entity-Relationship (E-R) Diagram

The relationship between the entities, we called Entity-Relationship (E-R) Diagram. E-R Diagram is a specialized graphics model that provides a relationship between entities in an information system.

1. One-to-one relationship:

In this one individual record of one table is related to one individual record of other tables.

Examples:

  • one employee can be given one loan only.
  • A teacher may be in charge of a class and each class must be in charge of by one teacher.
  • A student has one and only one report card and each report card is owned by one and only one student.

2. One-to-many relationship:

In this one individual record in one table is related to many records of other tables.

Examples:

  • One employee can be given many loans.
  • A student can borrow some books from library and a book in the library may be borrowed by at most a student.
  • A class is formed by a group of at least one student and each student is allocated to one and only one class.

3. Many-to-many relationship:

In this many records of one table are related to many records of other tables.

Examples:

  • One employee can be given many loans and one loan can belong to many employees together.
  • A student enrolls in at least one course and a course is enrolled by at least one student.
  • A student may apply for more that one scholarship and each scholarship may receive some applications from student.

One-to-many relationship diagram is the most common diagram because it's simple and we can see it in different fields and areas.

Many-to-many relationship diagram is capable to handle the database in most easy was because it establishes relations between entities in both directions in many way.
