1. I am researching on the most common waterborne disease affecting North America i.e. giardiasis or may also be known as "beaver fever".

2. Giardiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite known as "Giardia lamblia" (most likely to be present in animal or human faeces).

3. The symptoms of Giardiasis are:

a. The most common symptoms which can occur in the person affected by giardia are:

- diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, gas, malaise, and weight loss which can be accompanied by vomiting, chills, headaches and fever.

b. The symptoms for giardiasis according to the body systems are listed below:

-pain present over the abdominal area as the small intestine is affected in this disease.

-in gastrointestinal system the symptoms include diarrhoea, belching, bloating, fat present in the stool, indigestion, nausea or passing gas in enormous amount.

-in entire body the symptoms include fatigue, loss of appetite, malaise or malnutrition.

- it may include other common symptoms including cramping, foul smelling stool or loss of weight.

Yes it can spread from one person to another if the healthy person will come in contact with the infected person or if consuming of contaminated food and water. Moreover it is likely to be transferred through pet cats and dogs as well.

4. The symptoms of Giardiasis may last from 6days to 16days after initial contact with the microorganism and in some people it might last as long as a month or more.

Giardiasis can be treated with long term antibiotic treatment provided for the patient in severe conditions.

5. This disease is found around the world but it mostly affects the people of North America (or United states) and Canada. It is more common in areas with poor sanitations and where the drinking water is perilous or contaminated.

The recent outbreak to this disease has not been reported but there is a continuous incidence in United States .

6. The most effective water treatment to kill or inactivate giardia is to bring the water to a rolling boil state for a minute and then allowing it cool. It can be stored in a clean container with a tight cover and refrigerate.
