  1. People behave in a certain way if they feel that they are not at risk for getting disease. For example a woman who is faithful to her sex partner and believes that her sex partner is faithful to her may not engage in sex practices to reduce the chances of infection. Her perception of risk for infection may be low. This represents one of the tenets of the Health Belief model. What are the other four?
  2. Change is a process and different people are at different stages of the process. The stages of change theory describes this process. If we want to change our behavior or help others change their behavior we try to understand this process. What are the stages of change? Also note that sometimes people reach the ‘top’ or reach the goal and may fall right back down. We may call that having a relapse.

The other four tenets of health belief model are

  • Perceived severity : Here the person understands the severity of the disease in earlier and react accordingly. For e.g.,a patient with cance could perceive its severity in earlier,a women who is going to labor a child
  • Perceived susceptibility :Here the person suspects of getting an th diseases. For e.g., professional who are working in radiation department can perceive the susceptibility of getting radiation hazards
  • Perceived benefits :Here the people take preventive measure to keep away diseases. For e.g.,walking prevents major diseases
  • Perceived barriers : This refers to the discomfort or side effects after any procedure and how a people behave in that situation.For e.g.,surgery may have adverse effects which is considered to be a barrier,and methods involved to overcome it is the benefits

The stages of change are as following

There are six stages of change namely

  • Precontemplation:Here the people have negative thinking that being a optimistic. It takes nearly six months to under go behaviour change from pessimism and start acting
  • Contemplation:Here people have an intention to change behaviour but still in a dilemma
  • Preparation:People start to take actions in next 30 days to develop a healthier behaviour
  • Action:The person have changed the behaviour and tries to continue it
  • Maintainable:The behaviour changes will be continued for the rest of the time
  • Termination:Here people completely leave their unhealthy behaviour.
