Answer #1

Given, Demand = 5 poppers / hour

Calculated cycle rate = (60)/5 = 12 min

a) Theoretical minimum number of workstations= sum of total task times / cycle time

                             = (10+12+8+11+7+5)/12= 53/12 = 4.41 workstations = 5 workstations

b)

The total station time is nothing but the calculated cycle time. So, total station time of each station is 12 min

In order of precedence relationship and largest task time: A->B->C->D->E->F

Workstation 1:

                             First task = A

                             Time left= 12-10 = 2 min

So, workstation 1: A

Workstation 2:

                             First task = B

                             Time left= 12-12 = 0 min

So, workstation 2: B

Workstation 3:

                             First task = C

                             Time left= 12-8 = 4 min

So, workstation 3: C

Workstation 4:

                             First task = D

                             Time left= 12-11 = 1 min

So, workstation 4: D

Workstation 5:

                             First task = E

                             Time left= 12-7 = 5 min

                             Second task = F

                             Time left= 5-5 = 0 min

So, workstation 5: E->F

Were you able to assign all the activities as per theoretical minimum workstations : Yes

c) Efficiency with 5 workstations = (sum of all tasks) / (no of workstations *   Cycle time)

        = (53)/ (5*12) = 0.8833% = 88.3%
