Answer #1

Number of chromosomes in human germ cell at different atages of meiosis –

Meiosis - I :

  • Prophase I – 46
  • Metphase I – 46
  • Anaphase I – 46
  • Telophase I – 46

End of meiosis I (daughter cells) – 23

Meiosis - II :

  • Prophase II – 23
  • Metaphase II – 23
  • Anaphase II – 46
  • Telophase II – 46

End of meiosis II (daughter cells) — 23

Explanation : The first cell division in meiosis i.e. meiosis - I is a reduction division where chromosome number reduced to half in duaghter cells. In anaphase homologous chromosomes separates. In telophase - I, though the cells are not completely separated but a nuclear membrane reforms around the separated chromosomes. So, the two nucleus are still the part of one cell. And that's why the chromosome number of that cell is 46. When cytokinesis I occurs, that cell completely divides and form two daughter cells. In each daughter cell, the chromosome number is 23.

Meiosis II is an equational division like mitosis as no change in chromosome number occurs. In anaphase II sister chromatid separates into two pairs, each containing 23 number of chromosomes. But they are still inside a single cell. In telophase nuclear membrane forms around the separated chromosomes, and after cytokinesis II when the cell is divided into two daughter cells then the chromosome number in each daughter cell remains at 23.

Can someone please check my answer? Understanding chromosome number and behavior during cell division is an important concept in genetics. Fill out the chart below for each phase of mitosis in terms of N (where N = haploid number). For example, humans have a haploid number of 23. There are 46 chromosomes (2N) present in prophase of mitosis. Each chromosome is present in its replicated form (i.e. as sister chromatids) so there will be 2 chromatids per chromosome and the...
