Define the term parapraxes and show its importance to Freud’s contention that much everyday behavior is unconsciously motivated.
Freud’s described his most of the major work in “The Interpretation of Dreams was Psychopathology of Everyday Life” in which he postulated the concept of parapraxes. Parapraxes can be defined as relatively minor errors in everyday life such as forgetting things, small accidents, slips of the tongue (Freudian slips), losing things and mistakes in writing. He also identified that such type of errors are often unconsciously motivated.
According to Freud, all behavior gets motivated by the legitimacy of the concern things that seek to cause the abnormal and normal type of behavior. Furthermore, he believed that behavioral causes are generally unconscious in nature that stimulates the people to do the activity of parapraxes in an unconsciously and motivated kind of manner.
Thus, Freud propounded his search for parapraxes towards the contents of the unconscious mind by using specific types of words such as memory lapses, slips of the tongue, dream analysis, gestures, accidents and mannerisms that shows the importance towards Freud’s contention in motivating the unconsciously type of behavior.
