What did Freud mean when he said that true psychoanalysis began only after hypnosis had been discarded?
According to Freud, he suggested that hypnosis is ineffective to be treated prematurely and was found an alternative method to combat with the hypnosis conditions. At the Nancy school, he observed that the hypnotist have the ability to bring back their memory in a rational manner. Keeping in this mind, Freud asked the patients to recall previous experienced symptoms by recollecting the numerous experiences that is considered to be making hindrance towards their goal.
Thus, Freud approached the recollection of a traumatic experience by reflecting the condition known as resistance. He also identified that the pressure technique was effective in treating hypnosis by encouraging to patients to speak freely about the working of their mind that collectively known as free association. Free association enhances the property of transference, countertransference and resistance that deals with the traumatic experience in a more holistic approach.
The goals of psychotherapy help to overcome resistance in the patients that ultimately attains the goals of traumatic experience. He also believed that the free association provides the fragmented ideas of the psychoanalyst towards unconscious nature that determines the structure and personality of an unconscious mind of a person.
