Solutions For An Introduction to Genetic Analysis Chapter 10 Problem 6P

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

In Agarose gel electrophoresis, the fusion of molecules (deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA), or Proteins) is located into a well cut into an agarose gel and an electric current is applied. Then, the molecules will travel through the gel at different rates, due to their mass. If the molecules are positively charged, the molecules move towards the negatively charged cathode (- pole). When the molecules are negatively charged the molecules move towards the positively charged anode (+ pole).

As the DNA has negative charge, because of the phosphate group on the nucleotides, the DNA will migrate towards positively charged anode.
