The actual amount of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) necessary to encode this protein is 4440 base pairs (1480 x 3 = 4440 bp). Yet, the size of the cystic-fibrosis gene is 250,000 bp (250 kb). That is, the actual gene size is approximately 56 times larger than the necessary size.
This huge difference is due to the introns, the extra DNA. These introns will be spliced out of the primary transcript during RNA (ribonucleic acid) processing for correct translation.
