In this project, you access a hard disk’s Properties dialog box in Windows XP/ Vista/7, Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, or Server 2008/Server 2008 R2 to view options available for disk management. To open a hard disk’s Properties dialog box:

1. In Windows XP or Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, click Start and click My Computer. In Windows Vista/7 or Server 2008/Server 2008 R2, click Start and click Computer.

2. Right-click a hard drive, such as Local Disk (C:) or OS (C:) and click Properties.

3. Make sure that the General tab is displayed. Record the amount of free disk space. Keep in mind that this information can be very important, particularly when your disk is nearly full and you need to monitor this situation or determine if you need to purchase a larger disk.

4. Click the Tools tab. What disk tools can you start from this tab? Record what you find.

5. In the Properties dialog box, also notice that there is the Quota tab for managing disk quotas and the Security tab for setting security. If your operating system is configured for file sharing, there is a Sharing tab to manage file and folder sharing from a disk. (You learn more about security and file sharing in Chapter 10, “Resource Sharing over

a Network.”)

6. Click Cancel in the Properties dialog box and close the My Computer or Computer window.
